A data-first organization
“Data transparency and insights are paramount at our company,” says Nick Howard, vice president of data science at Assurance. With a large ecosystem of applications and event streams, Assurance needs to leverage important data from each solution in real time, all in one place.
After hitting a wall with several other tools, including limits on ingestion rates and field-name indexing, Assurance turned to Splunk for a single, scalable solution that could handle heavy data volumes, and make that data actionable in real time across the organization. Joining the Splunk Investigate beta program, Assurance found that the solution’s real-time data integration with streaming capabilities easily collected and processed data from many sources, including container and serverless environments.
“Splunk’s broad ingest capabilities perfectly suit all our needs,” says Ivan Arkhipov, director of engineering. Assurance has been collaborating with the Splunk team to ensure that Splunk Investigate will be their one tool for all real-time information needs: business dashboards, infrastructure health monitors and incident debugging.
Data drives decisions
At Assurance, data drives every decision. “We often see our CEO and president consulting the many TV dashboards displayed throughout our office, asking questions and inquiring about everything from outbound calling and lead generation to agent response rates,” Arkhipov says. “These insights improve the direction of the business.”
Data is vital to the success of Assurance’s fast-moving DevOps culture. “As an engineer, you’re responsible for what you deploy,” Arkhipov says. With insights from Splunk, engineering teams will be empowered to make decisions with speed, agility and confidence — whether rolling out new infrastructure features, tackling an outage efficiently, or monitoring business health in production to quickly resolve issues.
Enabling collaborative investigation
Investigations can be challenging, forcing team members to operate in silos, switching between different tools and losing context along the way. With Splunk Investigate’s workbook feature, Assurance plans to improve visibility and collaboration across the team through its ability to run multiple iterative searches, add text, and import images and dashboards into a single interface.
“Splunk Investigate’s collaborative capability has worked well for our team during the beta,” Arkhipov says. “We should easily be able to get everyone on the same page, whether digging into an anomaly or trying to uncover what happened. It will help us understand issues, identify the specific problem and resolve outages faster. We’ve seen great value in the beta and are excited about the future.”
Business insights for a successful future
Assurance continues to push the boundaries of how to leverage data within their organization, and a great example is how they match customers looking for insurance with licensed sales agents in real time. Using Splunk, Assurance’s sales leadership has real-time visibility into customer demand and agent availability by geography, using this data to run daily operations. By prototyping new ideas such as surge commission rates for agents in high-demand states, the team can ensure a fast response to potential customers.
“Assurance continues to be the most data-driven company I have ever worked for,” Arkhipov says, “and we are looking at our partnership with Splunk to further that mission.”
“We often see our CEO and president consulting the many dashboards displayed throughout our office. These insights will change the course of the workday.”
