Splunk is here to build a safer and more resilient digital world. The world's leading enterprises use our unified security and observability platform to keep their digital systems secure and reliable. While customers love our technology, it's our people that make Splunk stand out as an amazing career destination and why we've won so many awards as a best place to work. If you become a Splunker, we want your whole, authentic self, what we call your "million data points". So bring your work experience, problem-solving skills and talent, of course, but also bring your joy, your passion and all the things that make you, you.

Role Summary

Splunk is seeking someone with experience monitoring infrastructure and/or web applications to help connect engineers, developers, and practitioners to our world-class Observability products. If you’ve written blog posts, given conference presentations, or otherwise connected with a technical audience and want to do more, this is the opportunity for you.
In this role, you will connect with developers (in every sense of that word,) build a meaningful community with them, and educate them about observability and Splunk’s unique approach to it. You will be responsible for creating content targeted at people who use observability platforms every day (like SREs, software engineers, and platform engineers). This will primarily focus on detailed, how-to articles that help our customers learn how to monitor their applications in a fast, efficient way.
Your goals will be to make sure that new users of our observability tools can feel confident that they know what to do and how to start getting value from them. You’ll learn how to integrate Splunk’s observability products with third-party applications and open-source projects, then communicate that through written articles and demos, and maybe even through speaking at events. You’ll also engage with observability customers through Splunk’s community forum and Slack, making sure that they feel like there’s someone “on the inside” at Splunk they can talk to.
You should have a passion for storytelling through product, a fun, positive attitude, and you should also genuinely enjoy helping other people figure stuff out.

What you’ll get to do

  • Write technical blog posts and articles for Splunk.com and third party websites
  • Create practitioner-facing best practice tutorials for Splunk’s Observability products, including providing instruction on how to instrument 3rd party data sources, cloud providers, and applications in a variety of languages
  • Participate in online communities & forums with target audiences
  • Develop technical content, including interactive content, videos, demos, and other assets to promote use cases, product capabilities and benefits for the Splunk Observability product line
  • Deliver webinars and hands-on workshops to demonstrate and accelerate adoption of products
  • When appropriate, speak at virtual or in-person events to promote and evangelize Splunk’s Observability solutions

Must-have qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in technical marketing, developer evangelism or other practitioner-focused marketing roles or time spent as an SRE, DevOps/Cloud engineer or software developer/engineer
  • Hands-on experience with Observability tools, including at least a few of: infrastructure monitoring, application performance monitoring, AIOps, incident response, and logging tools
  • Understanding of modern infrastructure technologies, including at least a few of: virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes, public and private cloud, microservices, serverless functions, and service meshes
  • A strong affinity for and interest in producing a high volume of technical writing
  • Commitment to education and customer success, with a drive to go above and beyond to ensure awareness of our products, then successful adoption and onboarding
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Love of learning, strong team spirit, and willingness to self-start.
  • Ability to travel to industry conferences, customer visits, sales meetings, and other U.S. and international destinations (where appropriate and as necessary - we anticipate this role will travel 10% or less of the time)

Nice-to-have qualifications

We’ve taken special care to separate the must-have qualifications from the nice-to-haves. “Nice-to-have” means just that: Nice. To. Have. So, don’t worry if you can’t check off every box. We’re not hiring a list of bullet points–we’re interested in the whole you.
  • An intermediate understanding of software development, debugging, optimization, and/or troubleshooting - hands-on experience with common programming languages preferred
  • Ability to explain technical concepts succinctly to people at all levels (can you describe what observability is in a sentence or two to someone at a barbecue? Could you explain it in-depth to a VP of Engineering?)
