Nevada Department of Transportation Transforms IT Operations and Improves Security Posture with Splunk

NDOT Gains Operational Intelligence to Help Protect Sensitive Data and Improve Application Performance

SAN FRANCISCO - May 8, 2013Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLK), the leading software platform for real-time operational intelligence, today announced that the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) relies on Splunk® Enterprise to identify anomalies in application and network data, improve operational efficiencies and enhance its security systems. With Splunk® Enterprise, NDOT has drastically reduced the number of hourly errors in the network and increased its security posture by capturing and analyzing its machine data.

NDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the 5,400 miles of highway and over 1,000 bridges that make up the Nevada highway system. With Splunk Enterprise, NDOT transformed its approach to cybersecurity. The agency now proactively monitors access to and usage of all its sensitive information, including personally identifiable data of its approximately 2,000 employees. With Splunk software, the agency can now quickly generate reports and custom dashboards that provide an overview of its network, web servers and FTP logs to help identify attacks as they happen.

"We initially started using Splunk Enterprise as a platform for real-time security monitoring and very quickly discovered the kind of results we can generate," said Kimberly Munoz, IT manager, State of Nevada Department of Transportation. "For example, the very day we deployed a single firewall device into the field, Splunk Enterprise alerted our team in real time when someone overseas tried to connect to secure shell (SSH). The firewall should never have been configured to allow any outside connection to SSH. We discovered, investigated and closed an open invitation to attackers in less than a few hours. Without Splunk Enterprise, we would not have known the device was compromised for weeks, at best."

NDOT also utilizes Splunk Enterprise to collect, index and analyze machine data in IT operations and application management in order to reduce downtime and resolve problems faster by creating end-to-end operational intelligence across NDOT's complex set of transportation systems. Before Splunk Enterprise, these systems generated 35,000 errors per hour. Today, they generate less than 2,500 errors per day, and the state can resolve these remaining errors in minutes or hours.

"The State of Nevada Department of Transportation is better serving Nevada residents by taking a proactive stance to protect the state's networks and data," said Bill Cull, vice president of public sector, Splunk. "State and local government agencies face new and daunting data challenges in a very difficult time for budgets. As IT systems become increasingly complex, security and systems vulnerabilities only increase. By tapping into their machine data, state and local governments can create operational intelligence from IT and business systems, enabling substantial returns on investment and greater stability. Splunk is proud to have the State of Nevada as a customer and is thrilled NDOT is using Splunk software to make such a significant difference."
