Forschungszentrum Jülich Standardizes on Splunk Enterprise

The Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) Accelerates Problem Identification and Increases Efficiency Across its Infrastructure

SAN FRANCISCO - December 9, 2014 - Splunk Inc. (NASDAQ: SPLK), provider of the leading software platform for real-time Operational Intelligence, today announced that Forschungszentrum Jülich has selected Splunk® Enterprise as its companywide platform for Operational Intelligence. The research center, which focuses on developing key technology in the areas of energy, climate, information technology and brain research, is using Splunk software to collect, search, monitor, analyze and visualize its machine data, including different authorization systems. “Splunk software enables us to easily capture and investigate the logs from a number of different systems, all in one place,” said Egon Grünter, Communications Systems Division, Supercomputing Center. “This flexibility coupled with reliable performance, even at massive scale, provides us with a number of valuable advantages, including improved security and more efficient business processes. Moving to Splunk Enterprise has resulted in our employees becoming more productive.”

With Splunk technology, the security and network teams have drastically reduced the mean-time-to-investigate (MTTI) and the mean-time-to-resolve (MTTR) issues, allowing intervention before any impact is felt. Previously, the teams had no direct access to machine data, so analysis and problem identification required them to first gather the relevant information from IT administrators - a process that was extremely time and resource intensive. User roles now correspond to different access rights, and the machine data that monitors authorized access to the operating supercomputer and cluster systems is gathered and evaluated centrally. This means that today employees can easily access the data they need to get the job done.

“The Jülich Supercomputing Centre is a classic Splunk success story. First, the security and network divisions gained incredible value from Splunk Enterprise, and now an expansion to analyze further security-relevant data is underway,” said Olav Strand, director of central Europe, Splunk. “We often see customers start with Splunk software for one particular use case, then adoption spreads organically as organizations realize its potential as an Operational Intelligence platform throughout the enterprise. We are looking forward to working closely with Forschungszentrum Jülich as its Splunk journey continues.”
