Powering Inclusion with Openness: Dominique’s Career Journey
Dominique’s role has her talking with candidates, recruiters, hiring managers, and her team continuously throughout the day — but this work doesn’t feel daunting to her since she’s used to working with all sorts of people. Before coming to Splunk, Dominique was in the hotel industry, doing everything from operations, guest relations, to recruiting. All of that work with different people and cultures made a big impact on her and how she approaches her work. “You learn that certain stereotypes you may have in your head are rarely true and you have to think much more openly,” she recounted. “Today, I go through life much more openly, and that helps in recruitment, too.”
Our culture of belonging was a major component of what drew Dominique to Splunk. She’d been looking to get into tech, and wanted to join a company that provides “opportunities for advancement, an inclusive culture, and the fun factor” – and Splunk just so happened to have a recruiting role available.
Now that she’s been here for a few years, she can confidently say that the culture is just as she thought it would be when interviewing. “I’ve never felt I couldn't be myself,” Dominique shared, “because you can just show up as who you are, even when you have bad days.” She also feels a sense of solidarity, where everyone is able to freely exchange ideas. “When you see hundreds of people coming together — and not getting hung up on the challenges but striving for the solution — that's really special.”
A major focus for her as her role has grown over the last few years at Splunk has been working with our employee resource groups (ERGs) to further promote diversity at Splunk. Her scope in this work has also expanded as she’s now a co-lead for our global Pride ERG. “I never thought I would become a global co-lead,” she laughed. Together with co-lead Dave (who she called her work husband since they work so closely) and regional leads, Dominique helps increase representation and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community, and builds allyship within Splunk.
As Dominique has learned throughout her career, exposure to different people and ideas leads to greater growth and innovation. She summed it up by saying, “I don't want to work with people who think the same way that I do. I love being challenged, especially on a mental level. I love when people change my perception and I can learn. I think we grow mostly when we step out of our known environment.”
