Introducing IPv6 Support for AWS Regions and Splunk Offerings
Today, we are thrilled to announce that Splunk has launched Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) support for Splunk Cloud Platform for AWS FedRAMP Moderate and High, Splunk Cloud Platform for AWS DoD IL2 and IL5, Splunk Cloud Platform AWS Commercial, and Splunk Enterprise. This significant update is a proactive step towards addressing the impending issue of IPv4 address depletion, which has become increasingly concerning since its introduction in 1984.
The introduction of IPv6 support to select Splunk offerings comes at a pivotal time, in line with the OMB-M-21-73 mandate issued by the US government. This mandate requires that ”...at least 80% of IP-enabled assets on Federal networks are operating in IPv6-only environments” by September 30, 2025. This marks a significant milestone in our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of our customers and ensuring a seamless and secure experience with Splunk products. This addition will empower organizations to embrace the future of networking and drive impactful outcomes in their mission-critical use cases. Splunk anticipates that governments and private companies worldwide will drive increased adoption in the future.
IPv6 brings advanced security capabilities and features to support the anticipated growth of the Internet. Google measures that current global IPv6 adoption sits at around 46% as of July 18th, 2025. The scarcity and rising costs of unique global IPv4-based addresses have underscored the urgency of transitioning to IPv6. In fact, according to AWS, public IPv4 address costs have surged by 300% over the last five years, emphasizing the necessity of embracing IPv6.
Recognizing that customers are at different stages of adopting IPv6, the applicable Splunk offerings are enabled with IPv4/IPv6 dual-stacking. This ensures compatibility and a smooth transition between the protocols, allowing customers to seamlessly proceed with their IPv6 migrations. Whether it's ingestion, navigating to the user interface, or interacting with the REST APIs, Splunk ensures that customers' IPv6 needs are fully met, providing uninterrupted service across both IPv4 and IPv6 routes.
IPv6 is an opt-in connectivity option across Splunk Enterprise, Splunk Cloud subscription, and Splunk Enterprise Security and ITSI applications in the AWS regions (commercial, FedRAMP Moderate/High, and DoD IL2/IL5) at no additional cost. We encourage you to contact your account manager to evaluate your requirements and take advantage of this opportunity today.
Splunk remains committed to expanding IPv6 solutions down the line. For more information and to get started with IPv6 support, please contact your account manager. We look forward to helping you leverage IPv6 for a more robust and resilient infrastructure.
