Sr. Threat Scientist - US Remote

Splunk’s Threat Science team is the R&D arm of the Splunk Threat Research team. The Threat Science team stays on top of the emerging threat landscape and develop either novel detections or improve existing detections in ways that significantly improve upon the state of the art. We tackle a spectrum of security problems facing analysts using data driven approaches to develop our solutions across threat detection and assisting the analyst. We are hiring motivated Scientists across all these areas.

The ideal candidate will be a critical thinker who is passionate about using data to solve challenging security problems and is excited to work in a fast-paced environment.


As a Threat Scientist in Splunk’s Threat Science Group you will be responsible for developing new machine learning models for detecting security threats and improving the analyst experience in our security products. You’ll work closely with our top engineering and product teams to identify and work on next generation product features and functions to drive product innovation and industry disruption.


  • Work closely with Engineering, Product and Customers to scientifically frame the security problems and come up with the machine learning models.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis to gain deeper understanding of the data.
  • Develop and test statistical and machine learning models.
  • Write production quality code to build models and work with Software Engineering teams to deploy them in production.


  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelors in Computer Science, Computer Engineering; or 6 years and a technical Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Strong understanding of modern machine learning techniques and their mathematical concepts.
  • 1-2+ years of professional experience in research, data science or engineering around build and shipping machine learning or statistical models.
  • You have expert level skills in python or scala
  • You have an uncanny ability to learn new technologies quickly and are not afraid to share your hard-won insights with fellow team members.
  • You have excellent problem-solving skills with great attention to detail, as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills (both verbal and written).
  • Self starter with a passion and curiosity for solving challenging security problems with data.

Desirable, but not required:

  • Expertise in developing software on a public cloud platform (e.g. AWS, GCP, MS Azure etc.)
  • Expertise in developing software with stream processing technology (e.g. Flink, Kafka, AWS Kinesis etc.)
  • Experience developing and putting into production test automation and CI/CD systems
