Senior Principal Software Engineer - Observability

Join us as we pursue our disruptive new vision to make machine data accessible, usable, and valuable to everyone. We are a company filled with people who are passionate about our product and seek to deliver the best experience for our customers. At Splunk, we’re committed to our work, customers, having fun, and most importantly, to each other’s success.

As applications and systems become more complex and user experience is at high stake, observability - the ability to monitor and understand the systems and how they impact users, becomes one of the biggest challenges for engineering teams. We are building a suite of world-class tools to help engineers deliver better, faster, and more reliable applications.

We are looking for a Senior Principal Software Engineer to join our Observability teams. As a senior leader in the team, you will provide architectural leadership in designing very large-scale distributed systems, streaming data pipelines, and advanced algorithms that turn data into insights and actions for our customers. Your sphere of influence is across multiple products and multiple teams. You will collaborate closely with engineering and product leaders in the broad organizations. We move fast and iterate quickly. We are obsessed with solving customers’ problems. We have ambitious goals to build best-of-its-kind products. You will help us win in a fast-growing market.

  • You will participate in the design, implementation, maintenance, and evolution of very large-scale distributed systems.
  • You will provide technical leadership across multiple observability products - layout holistic architectural roadmaps, identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, and drive innovation.
  • You will work closely with product leaders to integrate business needs into the architecture roadmap and set strategic directions for products and technology.
  • You will instigate and drive cross-function/cross-team technical initiatives.
  • You will mentor senior engineers and level up others on the teams.
  • You will participate in high-profile customer engagements and represent the technology.
  • You will help explore and brainstorm new observability product features that help you operate your own systems better.
  • You will help improve engineering quality and operation excellence for the whole team.

  • 10+ years of industry-expert experiences in architecting, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems and multi-tenant cloud services.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership across multiple products and multiple teams.
  • The ability to adapt quickly and can solve problems with uncertainty.
  • The ability to mentor other engineers to design and implement systems, make right trade-offs, and promote good engineering practices.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Passionate about building elegant and powerful tools to solve customer problems.
