Senior Manager - Internal Technical Documentation for Product Engineering

We are looking for an experienced, innovative information development manager to join the Splunk Engineering Productivity team. You will be responsible for people and project management, with some writing responsibilities. In this role, you will work with the Senior Engineering Manager and other manager colleagues to lead a team of 3-5 technical writers located in San Francisco, San Jose, Vancouver, and beyond. You will be responsible for the internal documentation needs of the engineering organization to curate and create documentation that is easily consumable, relevant and searchable.

You will partner with engineering teams to identify the current and future needs of the organization in the area of internal documentation, create a holistic strategy and lead a team of technical writers, information architects and editors to solve the biggest pains.

What You'll Do:

  • Organize and curate our existing documentation on Confluence, Google Docs, and other documentation platforms.
  • Create a set of guides for application engineers to onboard to internal platforms
  • Partner with software architects, HR and Product management teams to create content to support new hire onboarding.
  • Curate, create (when necessary), edit, publish, maintain a set of documentation to support the entire SDLC for each product line.
  • Create and execute on a content strategy for internal documentation that leads to long term success in developing, publishing, finding, maintaining relevant information.
  • Build and lead a supportive and collaborative team of writers and editors dedicated to building high-quality internal content for product engineers.
  • Partner with IT to improve searching for relevant information for engineers.
  • Train engineers to write better and most user-centric documentation.
  • Support your team members as they manage multiple, simultaneous content-development projects from planning and estimation through development, delivery, and maintenance.
  • Supervise the performance and professional development of technical writers with varying backgrounds and levels of experience.
  • Interact daily with internal customers through doc feedback and other channels to address questions, derive requirements, and participate in the Splunk engineering community.
  • Assess and improve existing sets of documentation by working with individual teams/owners
  • Create guardrails on when/how to deprecate non-relevant and outdated content.

Who You Are & What Makes You Qualified:

  • 5+ years directly leading a team that writes for a developer audience (internal or external) in an Agile product development environment.
  • Solid knowledge of data collection technologies, SDKs, and developer tools and workflows.
  • Experience with data analytics products and services.
  • Consistent track record in performance management and career development of individual contributors.
  • Practical experience in topic-based content, minimalism, and use-case documentation.
  • Firsthand experience talking directly and regularly with internal engineering teams.


Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or relevant professional experience.
