As part of Splunk’s R&D team, the Data Science Organization is passionate about providing quantitative analytics and evidence to inform business decisions. We partner with cross-functional business stakeholders to identify and address critical business questions and use data, analytical methods, and modeling to translate quantitative assessments into actionable insights. Analyses inform business challenges such as guiding product roadmaps, streamlining engineering development lifecycles, and accelerating customer adoption and utilization trends. We are seeking a Senior Manager of Data Engineering who is passionate about creating the data pipelines, analytical platforms and infrastructure to support solving practical business questions with data-driven analytics. 

Role:

As a Senior Manager of Data Engineering, you will be responsible for building and evolving our data science, experimentation, and delivery platforms. You will work collaboratively with engineering, IT, and operational leaders to bring a breadth of data, tools, and infrastructure together to create a collaborative, secure, and compliant environment for quantitative analysis and presentation. This includes working with product development teams to develop and implement a common framework for product instrumentation. You will be instrumental in enabling the Data Science team to utilize a breadth of product and business data sources to conduct and build analytical experiments, models, reports, and dashboards that inform business critical decisions

You will build and lead a focused team of diverse, smart and driven engineers distributed across multiple locations. The successful senior data engineering manager will create a cohesive, high-functioning team that thrives in a culture of trust, respect, and inclusion. You will be a critical enabler of data-driven decision making.

Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership and scale the team’s data infrastructure and tools. Drive the design, building, and launching of new data models and data pipelines. Ensure production quality methods to retrieve, condition, validate, synthesize, and manipulate data.
  • Build cross-functional relationships with data scientists, product managers, software engineers, IT, legal, security and other business partners to understand the data, tools, and governance needed and deliver on those needs. Seek diverse perspectives to drive innovation and create buy-in across stakeholders.
  • Define the team's roadmap, success metrics, priorities, and processes in close collaboration with the broader Data Science Organization, other engineering teams, and cross-functional partners.
  • Create order from chaos - provide structured solutions to create a world-class data science environment.
  • Iterate, document, and communicate throughout the development lifecycle.

Requirements:

  • Passion for grounding decisions in data and reasoning.
  • 5+ years of experience architecting and building environments to experiment with data.
  • 5+ years of software development experience building pipelines to gather key metrics for SaaS products.
  • Experience ensuring data integrity, security, and governance.
  • Experience driving impact through cross-functional leadership with business stakeholders and leading engineers/scientists at all levels. 
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
  • Focused on impact through disciplined execution and results.
  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of engineering management leading teams of 5 or more data engineers. Experience managing other managers is a plus.
  • Track record of leading and managing healthy and cohesive data engineering teams.
  • Experience working with distributed teams across multiple time-zones.
