Principal Product Manager - Distributed Search

A little about us. Splunk is here to build a safer and more resilient digital world. We’re proud to say that we’re the key to enterprise resilience for more than 11,000 enterprise organizations that use our Unified Security and Observability Platform to keep their systems secure and reliable. We’re also proud of our award-winning culture and our regular appearance on those “Best Places to Work” lists.

If you end up joining us, we’ll only ask one thing: bring your whole, authentic self, what we call your million data points. So bring your work experience, problem-solving skills and talent, of course, but also bring your joy, your passion and all the things that make you, you. Because when you feel free to be you, it makes it a lot easier for us to be us.

About the role:

Splunk is looking for a hardworking, enthusiastic, and driven Product Manager to drive the future of search & data platform at Splunk. You would initially be responsible for Splunk’s distributed search processing across Splunk and Cloud Storage, which is an integral part of our core value to customers. In this role, you will define the critical features and roadmap for bringing high-scale, high-performance search to Splunk customers and app developers.

You will use your understanding of the data platforms, cloud services, and data management to synthesize ideas that improve Splunk's search platform offering. Your cross-team collaboration skills will enable those improvements to be conceptualized and delivered to drive meaningful and impactful business outcomes.

You will work in the Data Platform team at Splunk, so a real appreciation for the needs of developers is vital. Exposure to other data management and platforms is likely a plus.

You will merge attention to technical detail with an ability to understand and align to business imperatives while working hand-in-glove with cross-functional execution teams to drive customer insights and inputs directly into the development process. Ideally, you have some experience running customer advisory boards.

Responsibilities

As with any fast-growing company, day-to-day responsibilities will span the entire product delivery pipeline and include deep interaction with customers, sales, and engineering.

  • Own the whole product experience for your area.
  • Engage with customers, develop insights into what is possible, and uncover unarticulated needs to ensure customer success.
  • Build product roadmaps based on customers' needs, including market and technology forces.
  • Define product specifications, user stories, mockups, and acceptance criteria independently and in collaboration with engineering.
  • Interact and collaborate with Support, NOC, and field teams to understand customer issues and drive business outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, QA, SRE, and release teams to plan, drive and execute product release cycles.
  • Collaborate with product marketing to support the creation of content.

Requirements

  • 5-7 years of proven success in product management.
  • Familiarity with cloud services, batch/stream data processing, and distributed search.
  • Strong sense of empathy to care deeply about customer problems and the user experience.
  • Analytical thinking skills and a data-informed approach to decision-making.
  • Collaborative, with strong communication skills, including the ability to translate sophisticated technical products and features into simple concepts and presentations.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience building search and data platform products with a focus on search processing, query language, high availability, performance, and scalability.
  • Deep understanding of data platform market and competition.
  • Strong bias for action, creative thinking, innovation, and data-informed product decision-making.
  • Exposure to cloud infrastructure and agile software development
  • Passion for solving interesting technical problems and building enterprise products with intuitive user experience.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (e.g. EE, CS); MBA or similar degree highly preferred
