Legal Counsel, Disputes & Litigation

Role

We are seeking an experienced and motivated litigator to join Splunk’s growing Compliance, Employment & Risk team which includes Compliance, Litigation & Investigations, Employment, and support of Splunk’s PubSec compliance efforts. This person will focus on disputes and litigation, supporting the Litigation & Investigations team and coordinating closely with the Compliance and Employment teams. This person will be highly collaborative and entrepreneurial, embracing the opportunity to help innovate, drive, and scale best-in-class litigation and dispute programs, build internal relationships, drive strategy across multiple functions, and anticipate evolving risk in a global market. This person will be flexible, creative, and self-motivated—showing initiative and perseverance, resourcefulness, a strong work ethic, a collaborative approach, and a sense of humor. This position will report to the Senior Counsel, Litigation & Investigations.

Responsibilities

As Litigation & Investigations Counsel, you will handle a broad range of risk management issues in a global environment. Specifically, you will:

  • Develop and drive scalable litigation and dispute-related processes and procedures to support a rapidly-growing global business.
  • Enhance the Company’s eDiscovery program, including developing and refining guidelines and processes and ongoing review and assessment of communication and collaboration tools, working closely with the Legal Operations teams.
  • Support global litigation and pre-litigation matters across a wide range of issues.
  • Support all facets of civil litigation including assessing and responding to subpoenas, garnishment orders, and bankruptcy notices; reviewing and revising pleadings, motions, written discovery, and correspondence; assisting with document collection and review; and interviewing witnesses and preparing witnesses for testimony.
  • Help manage outside counsel relationships, including staffing, litigation strategy, work product, day-to-day case activity, and budgets.
  • Work closely with internal business partners across the organization to proactively address and resolve potential disputes while supporting business objectives.
  • Support the team on a variety of internal investigations in collaboration with other applicable corporate functions, including Internal Audit, Finance, HR, and Sales.
  • Coordinate with the team on remediation and corrective action as appropriate for violations of Splunk policies and procedures.
  • Track and report on status and outcomes of investigations, litigation matters, and dispute resolution issues.
  • Develop automated and scalable processes that allow for verification and auditing. Whenever possible, use Splunk technology to drive these efforts.

Requirements: I've already done that or have that!

The candidate must have:

  • J. D. and good standing to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 5 years of litigation experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house, handling all aspects of civil litigation, including pre-litigation analysis and strategy, pleadings, fact and expert discovery, third-party discovery, and dispositive motions.
  • Deep knowledge of eDiscovery issues, including document retention policies and procedures, and collection, review, and production of documents.
  • Ability to provide practical, actionable advice while balancing risks and business reward.
  • Strong organizational skills, an ability to juggle multiple projects at a time in a fast-moving, quickly-changing environment, both collaborating as a team and working independently.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal and ability to advocate for a position while maintaining an open-minded approach.
  • Experience working with or in a fast-paced multinational b2b or enterprise software company with a channel sales model preferred.
  • Combination of both in-house and law firm experience desired.
  • Comfortable presenting to and engaging with senior leaders.
  • Experience creating and conducting formal presentations and trainings globally.
  • Ability to travel (domestically and internationally).
  • Sense of Humor!

Note: Splunk provides flexibility and choice in the working arrangement for most roles, including remote and/or in-office roles. We have a market-based pay structure which varies by location. Please note that the base pay range is a guideline and for candidates who receive an offer, the base pay will vary based on factors such as work location as set out below, as well as the knowledge, skills and experience of the candidate. In addition to base pay, this role is eligible for incentive compensation and may be eligible for equity or long-term cash awards.

Base Pay Range

SF Bay Area, Seattle Metro, and New York City Metro Area

Base Pay Range: $176,000.00 - 242,000.00 per year

California (excludes SF Bay Area), Washington (excludes Seattle Metro), Washington DC Metro, and Massachusetts

Base Pay Range: $164,000.00 - 225,500.00 per year

All other cities and states excluding California, Washington, Massachusetts, New York City Metro Area and Washington DC Metro Area.

Base Pay Range: $153,600.00 - 211,200.00 per year
