We seek an experienced and highly motivated Corporate Counsel to support and mature Splunk’s data protection initiatives globally. This role presents an exciting opportunity to be a key player in Splunk’s incident response program, influence product and services development, and craft policy and practice inside a “big data” analytics company. This role reports to the Law & Global Affairs Director, Data Protection, Operations and Cyber Security, and will help ensure that Splunk’s contractual, legal, and regulatory obligations to protect data are in place. In this role, you will support transactions and operational processes involving data protection, and provide training and advice across the organization about the Splunk’s data protection program and related security requirements. Splunk is based in the San Francisco Bay Area; for this position, Washington, DC Metro area and Eastern Time zone are preferred (other U.S. time zones will be considered).

  • Be proactive and demonstrate initiative, possess excellent business judgment, critical thinking, and a strong work ethic;
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships in order to assess and anticipate emerging risk areas across the Company;
  • Work collaboratively and responsively with a broad range of colleagues in the U.S. and globally to facilitate a coordinated team approach;
  • Maintain a sense of humor and camaraderie within the Data Protection Team and with our business partners across Splunk.

Responsibilities: I want and can do that!

The successful candidate will:

  • Work collaboratively with legal and business managers to help identify, develop, and implement process improvements related to data protection and cybersecurity;
  • Help support Splunk’s global incident response team and manage security events globally; Help build Splunk's practices globally to ensure ongoing compliance with applicable data protection laws, policies, guidelines, and processes;
  • Develop data security-related training materials and help lead data security training programs; Other responsibilities as needed

Requirements: I’ve already done that or have that!

Candidates must have:

  • J. D. from an ABA-accredited law school and member in good standing in any state bar;
  • At least 5-7 full years in participating in and managing cyber security incidents, including investigation, identification of potential legal issues, communications to internal and external Customers and Partners;
  • Proficient in the requirements of key data protection compliance programs in the EU and US (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, FedRAMP, PCI-DSS, UK NIS, Australia SOCI);
  • Familiarity with and strong interest in emerging AI/ML technologies, network infrastructure, and cybersecurity best practices;
  • Possess exceptional legal capabilities and judgment;
  • Strong familiarity with emerging technologies, network and cyber security, infrastructure resiliency, cloud computing, and cloud security;
  • Strong collaboration, organizational, and project management skills;
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills;
  • Self-motivated, self-reliant, confident, and detail-oriented;
  • Ability to interface and partner successfully with stakeholders and varying functions of Splunk; Proficiency in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Prior experience with OneTrust a plus;
  • A passion for data protection;
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Note: Splunk provides flexibility and choice in the working arrangement for most roles, including remote and/or in-office roles. We have a market-based pay structure which varies by location. Please note that the base pay range is a guideline and for candidates who receive an offer, the base pay will vary based on factors such as work location as set out below, as well as the knowledge, skills and experience of the candidate. In addition to base pay, this role is eligible for incentive compensation and may be eligible for equity or long-term cash awards.

Base Pay Range

SF Bay Area, Seattle Metro, and New York City Metro Area

Base Pay Range: $176,000.00 - 242,000.00 per year

California (excludes SF Bay Area), Washington (excludes Seattle Metro), Washington DC Metro, and Massachusetts

Base Pay Range: $164,000.00 - 225,500.00 per year

All other cities and states excluding California, Washington, Massachusetts, New York City Metro Area and Washington DC Metro Area.

Base Pay Range: $153,600.00 - 211,200.00 per year
