The Threat Science team researches the emerging threat landscape to develop detections that significantly improve upon the state of the art in Splunk’s Security product suites. The team also provides thought leadership in the Security Analytics community through publications and novel research.

Threat Science is the R&D function within Security Research at Splunk.

As the Director of this team, you will grow a team of scientists who are building innovative solutions for challenging problems in threat detection, response and automation.

In this role, you will be directly contributing to the research and development as you guide and work closely with the team and lead its charter.

  • Lead a team of threat scientists and oversee the research from initial prototypes to production.
  • Rapidly design, develop, deploy detections and response techniques in highly disparate environments using data alongside judgment to focus on the most impactful outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Threat Scientists, and Threat Engineers to design effective experimentation frameworks and report on results with scientific rigor.
  • Work closely with Security Product Managers, Threat Scientists and Threat Engineers to integrate successful research outcomes into Splunk’s security products suite.


  • PhD in Information Security, Computer Science or related technical field
  • 3+ years of Predictive Analytics/ Machine Learning modeling experience
  • 2+ years experience leading Data Science teams.
  • Proven track record of hiring, managing, mentoring and leading Managers, Data Scientists and Software Engineers to deliver products and services empowered by ML and AI.

Nice to have:

  • 2+ years experience with information security, threat detection or related domains
  • Domain expertise in network security, cloud security, systems security, software security, malware analysis or other related areas.
  • Extensive experience developing machine learning models in an applied environment.
