Every day, we use intuition without even noticing it. You anticipate what someone will say next. You get a gut feeling about a decision. You sense when something “fits” or is “off” before you can explain why.
On the surface, AI inference does something similar. It predicts “what comes next.” But the way it reaches that prediction, and the way you do, are different.
Understanding the gap between human intuition and the scaled pattern prediction of large language models (LLMs) is one of the most important skills for AI literacy. The space between statistical prediction and lived understanding is the difference between what is likely based on broad patterns and what is meaningful for your individual use case. Don’t assume the first answer is correct. Skepticism is your quality control and radar for anything that “feels off.”

Skepticism requires awareness of what you know, what you don’t know, and what you might not realize you don’t know. In intelligence analysis, these are sometimes called “known unknowns" and “unknown unknowns"—the blind spots that can make an AI-generated answer seem plausible even when it’s incomplete or wrong. Being honest about the limits of your own expertise helps you ask better questions, challenge assumptions, and avoid false confidence.

Let LLMs expand your perspective, but rely on your experience to interpret and refine.

If you notice the output losing focus, simply restate your goal, audience, or constraints. You can also pivot to a new chat. Think of it as giving the model a fresh anchor point.
5. Closing the Loop with Your Own Insight
The real magic happens when you take an LLM’s broad suggestions and ground them in your specific context. That’s how pattern recognition becomes understanding, and contextual judgment becomes action. AI can help you reason, draft, and explore ideas, but it should not receive data that is confidential, regulated, or personally identifiable. Provide structure, not secrets. Assume anything you share with a model could be stored or reviewed depending on system settings.

Even high-quality AI-generated content needs human review before it’s shared externally, operationalized, or used to make decisions that impact people.
