Splunk Announces Several Initiatives to Support Global Community
Company Launches Splunk Answers; Taps Former VA Linux/Sourceforge Evangelist as First Community Director
SAN FRANCISCO – APRIL 15, 2010 – Splunk, the IT Search company, today unveiled Splunk Answers, a dedicated resource for the Splunk user community to collaborate online and share best practices. Additionally, Splunk announced the appointment of John Mark Walker, formerly with Hyperic, as their first community director.
The Splunk user base is one of the most passionate groups of technologists in IT today. Splunk created Splunk Answers as a forum where Splunk users (Enterprise or Free), developers and Splunk experts can easily share knowledge with peers regarding how to use Splunk to better manage, secure or audit their IT environments. Splunk Answers joins another online property dedicated to the Splunk community, Splunkbase, a site featuring free community-and Splunk-created applications and add-ons. As the new community director, Walker will be a dedicated liaison with the various Splunk communities and focus on shepherding their growth.
"These announcements mark critical steps toward supporting our global community that is core to the Splunk brand," said Steve Sommer, VP of Worldwide Marketing, Splunk. "With over 1,750 licensed customers in 67 countries, and many more free users in virtually every country, these community initiatives are coming at the right time."
Prior to Splunk, Walker was the community director at Hyperic, where he focused on empowering early adopters and extending the plug-in developer community. During his tenure, the Hyperic community grew from a few dozen to thousands of successful users and developers around the world. He was also Foundry Manager for VA Software, Sourceforge and the Director of the LinuxWorld conference, where he evangelized to the Linux user base. Walker is widely involved in community groups, including SCALE, Geek-PAC.org, and Linux International.
Splunk also announced, as part of its community initiatives, plans for its First Splunk Worldwide User Conference, Splunk '10, taking place August 9-11, 2010 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. This event is expected to feature forty sessions led by Splunk experts and community members including users, partners and developers.
