Splunk Tames the Chaos Brought on by Virtualization
Splunk for VMware Management Provides Improved Performance, Availability and Management of IT Infrastructures Including Virtualized Environments
SAN FRANCISCO – September 9, 2008 – Splunk, the IT Search company, today announced the immediate availability of Splunk for VMware™ Management which offers extended management capabilities for VMware’s Virtual Infrastructure. The application provides IT professionals in charge of managing complex virtual environments with the only approach that easily crosses the boundaries of traditional IT systems and the virtual infrastructure.
Splunk’s powerful IT Search delivers a comprehensive view of the entire IT infrastructure in real-time, not only from ESX and VirtualCenter, but also from the server, guest operating systems, applications, and network. VMware ESX partitions servers into multiple virtual machines, and VirtualCenter helps manage the virtual machines.
"Splunk indexes in real time the highly transient information in VM environments, enabling users to achieve higher availability and service levels, faster troubleshooting, proactive debugging, as well as increased security and compliance," said Splunk customer Damian Murdoch, of Technical Architecture Solutions, a VMware consulting company.
"In May of 2008 we announced our commitment to take on the chaos created by a virtualized computing environment. With our new application specifically for VMware, Splunk enables IT staff to collect, analyze and report on data across their entire infrastructure—including virtualized environments," said Christina Noren, VP Product Management of Splunk. "Only by consolidating all the logs and information across the infrastructure can IT professionals effectively manage their computing environments."
The promise of increased efficiency and cost savings inherent in server virtualization has many IT professionals planning or starting virtual implementations. Existing system management tools were not designed to handle the dynamic nature of virtualization. The Splunk for VMware Management application includes a VMware API for data input, over 25 pre-defined searches, alerts, reports and dashboards specifically designed to monitor key metrics for the VMware Virtual Infrastructure.
RedMonk industry analyst Michael Cote stated, “Virtualized data centers have grown by leaps and bounds and are continuing to do so. Tools to manage virtualized servers haven't grown at the same clip, and having an IT search tool that consolidates physical and virtual management into a more unified view is especially welcome.”
Splunk supports all management use cases throughout the virtualization deployment lifecycle - virtualization planning, workload optimization, performance monitoring, root cause analysis and log management.
