BT and Splunk To Bring Managed Log Retention to Customers

SAN FRANCISCO – May 13, 2008 – Splunk, the IT Search company, and BT announced today that BT will license Splunk to build a new managed security offering that will enable customers to preserve 100 percent of logs on the customer's network to satisfy data retention requirements for a wide range of compliance mandates. The new BT service augments BT Counterpane's existing security monitoring and response services for its global customers. With Splunk's universal indexing capabilities, BT Counterpane’s Managed Log Retention customers will be able to collect, index and secure all security data from any application, server or device, while keeping it within the boundaries of the customers' networks.

The BT Counterpane log management solution powered by Splunk will complement Managed Security Monitoring by enabling a fully-indexed, searchable repository of all log activity from any device on the network; provide customers better visibility and control through rich reports and dashboards; and enable thorough security response with real-time search. Customers who use BT Counterpane's new Managed Log Retention service will benefit from levels of performance, scalability, and TCO management impossible to achieve with rigid, legacy log management solutions.

This universal indexing capability is a radical departure from traditional log management approaches that provide limited support for analyzing new and changing data formats. BT chose Splunk because this flexibility is critical to stay ahead of continually evolving threats in highly dynamic environments, and for ongoing compliance with broad IT data retention requirements.

With the Splunk IT Search Platform, BT Managed Log Retention will offer customers worldwide unique benefits, including the following features and value:

  • The industry’s first fully integrated approach to collect, secure and manage security events, logs, messages, traps, alerts, and statistics for comprehensive security and compliance.
  • Confidence in full security and manageability via BT Counterpane’s existing best-of-breed device management infrastructure.
  • Flexible pricing options for existing managed service customers and all new deployments.

"Thanks to this collaboration with Splunk, our customers will benefit from significantly enhanced security compliance capabilities," explained Toby Weir-Jones, vice president -- Product Strategy, BT Business Continuity, Security, and Governance Practice, North America. "The service enabled by the alliance of Splunk’s and BT’s technologies and experience will provide enterprises worldwide with a new and powerful security and compliance solution."

"This collaboration with BT is a unique relationship and an incredible opportunity to bring our combined technologies together, solving serious security management issues in data centers around the world," said Pervaiz Choudhry, director, Business Development, Splunk. "BT Group’s global presence as an integrated IT services company and Splunk’s IT Search technology leadership combine to deliver serious solutions to customers."

The Splunk IT Search platform is the industry’s first integrated approach to keeping infrastructure available, secure and compliant. Splunk collects and manages logs, configurations, messages, traps, alerts and statistics from every IT component. That data is then available to any application for fast problem solving, threat response, compliance reporting or insight into user activity and transactions. The platform includes a common set of services and APIs making it easy for BT to integrate Splunk with the BT Counterpane Sentry device to leverage vast amounts of IT data.
