By how much should you expect throughput to go up on a 64-bit OS such as a Linux kernel 2.6 as opposed to a 32-bit OS, without any fine-tuning of parameters i.e. using the default settings?

I've noticed a 30-40% increase and am not sure if this is purely dependent on the OS or if there's something about the specs of the two machines.

If you mean indexing throughput, in most cases we have not seen much of an increase moving from 32-bit to 64-bit at index time. Most of the performance gains we have seen with 64-bit are at search time.
