Please post instructions here

Dear Splunk,

Love the product, but this site is misserable...

Please post directions on how to use this part of your knowledgebase. Normal "Community Discussion" sites are like forums: you can post and have *discussions* with other *community* peeps. I am continually seeing people post things like "I'm trying to do such and such..." with responses from you that say: "please visit our support page", or "please submit a case...." Well, no. This is suposed to be a place where we can discuss things and help each other out, that's the idea, right?

If this section is not ready for prime-time, then say so. It's miss-leading and frusterating in the meantime.

Thanks! Cheers, Michael

Community Wiki information/discussion

Hi Michael,

i'm rachel perkins, the documentation manager at Splunk, and i'm the de-facto curator of what gets posted here. thank you for sharing your thoughts with me.

i apologize that you're finding the Wiki frustrating to use. we mention it a few times on various landing pages, but clearly it's not obvious enough: this Wiki is for sharing what you're doing with your Splunk deployments, and what you've learned. anyone with a splunk.com account can create new topics under any section, or add information to existing topics.

there do exist forums of the type you describe (to ask questions etc):

http://www.splunk.com/support/list/forum

i think what's causing the difficulty here is that we're expecting people to create/edit pages in the areas we defined, that are linked to the main sections. Talk:<something> pages are not linked to anything, so it's unlikely anyone but me (since i watch the RSS of changes to the whole site) will see these questions--and i do want people to get the help they need. for specific "how should i do xyz" sorts of things it seems as though it would be a better idea for people to contact support to get an immediate resolution.

thank you again for your note. please contact me at rachel@splunk.com if you want to discuss this further; i'd love to get your input.
