Splunk Earthquake

Splunk Earthquake is an application which uses USGS earthquake data and Splunk's searching and indexing capabilities to provide reporting capabilities to amateur geologists. The data comes from the USGS Scientific Data page, and specifically from the ftp server at www.ncedc.org, where the raw earthquake event data is stored.

Demo

You can access a demo at http://earthquake.splunklabs.com:8000. The demo will run through January 15th, 2009, or whenever I remember to turn off the instance.

To login, use guest as the username, and foobar as the password. Feel free to create as many saved searches as you like, but please don't change the dashboards!  ;)

Usage

The instance contains 10 years of USGS ANSS data, containing over 1 million earthquakes from around the world. Using Splunk's time range narrowing, you can search for a quake from a particular week or day, and then narrow further by region.

To start searching for an earthquake, simply type in an asterisk in the search box:
